Rescue on Pit River Bridge - Pulitzer Prize in 1954
In the summer of 1953, Virginia Schau was on a fishing trip with her family when she witnessed a truck accident at Shasta Lake, California. The cab of the truck had slipped off the Pit River Bridge. With her camera on hand, she captured the terrifying moment.

Thankfully, the driver and his companion were rescued by motorists, including Schau’s husband, who were on the scene. The heroic efforts were captured in her photograph, which was later published in multiple magazines and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1954. The photograph was taken with a Kodak Brownie camera.
