Janet Mendelsohn — a closer look at everyday life

Articles/Person

Janet Mendelsohn was not just a photographer — she was an observer, someone who used her camera to understand the world rather than simply document it.

Early life and background

Janet Mendelsohn was born in the United States, though little is widely known about her early years. What shaped her as a photographer, however, becomes clearer when looking at her education. She studied at Harvard University, a place that encouraged intellectual curiosity and critical thinking. But it was her time at the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in the late 1960s that had the biggest influence on her approach to photography.

The Centre, known for its groundbreaking work in cultural studies, was a place where scholars examined the way media, society, and everyday life intersected. Mendelsohn arrived there not just as a photographer but as someone eager to explore the connections between images and social reality. She wasn’t interested in photography as an art form alone—she saw it as a tool for understanding people and the environments they lived in.

During this time, she became influenced by documentary traditions that prioritized immersion and long-term observation. Instead of quick snapshots, she believed in spending time with her subjects, getting to know their routines, and capturing life as it unfolded naturally. This approach would define her most well-known work, a series of photographs taken in Birmingham’s Balsall Heath neighborhood.
